Tyler Bruening has came so close the past couple of years of getting that elusive first Lucas Oil win and last night he finally broke through at Golden Isles Speedway. Bruening becomes the 93rd different winner in the series history as he battled back around Daulton Wilson then held off Jonathan Davenport and Brandon Overton to secure the win.
44 Lucas Oil Late Models signed in to kick off the new season. Bruening kicked off his memorial night by setting a new track record. He would say in victory lane that was also a first for the Hawkeye driver.
Tyler Bruening would go out and win his heat race to secure the pole for the 50 lap main event. Other winners were Daulton Wilson, Ryan Gustin, and Devin Moran. B Main wins went to Cody Overton and Tim McCreadie.
At the drop of the green "The Beard" jumped out to the early race lead. Daulton Wilson would take the lead and was able to stretch out to a comfortable lead. We would later learn that Wilson was on a softer compound and as the laps went up on the scoreboard his lap times starting going down.
Bruening fell as low as fifth after a restart but got going on the high side and once he got back to second was quickly reeling in the leader. Wilson was married to the low line as he caught lapped traffic.
Michael Leach, making his first Lucas Oil start, was in front of the leader Wilson as Bruening was about to pass him for the lead. "The Perm" and "The Beard" were side by side as Wilson made contact with Leach causing the lapped car to spin. He would pull in calling it a night as Wilson had RF nose damage ending any chance of a podium finish. He would fall to tenth when the checkers waved.
A late yellow would wave with just five laps to go as Bruening had Overton and Jonathan Davenport on his bumper for a single file restart. Bruening had a perfect restart as Davenport would pressure Overton for the runner up spot. JD made the pass but had no shot at Bruening as the golden sixteen would finish 1.134 ahead of "Superman" Overton third, Moran fourth, and Shirley fifth.
After Bruening cleared tech he rolled back onto the track outside of turn 2 and saluted the turn 3 crowd. He landed in victory lane in front of the Lucas Oil banner with tears in his eyes. He would thank his dad, family, and crew for believing in him living his dream.
It's so satisfying to see a new face in victory lane and seeing the raw emotions as they get that first series win. They say the first one is the hardest to get then it gets easier. Hopefully for Bruening it won't take long to get that second win.
